What Is A Ring Main Unit (RMU)? How Is It Different From Standard Switchgear?

What Is a Ring Main Unit (RMU)? How Is It Different from Standard Switchgear?

Introduction

In power distribution systems, "ring main unit" and "switchgear" are two terms that often get confused. Many assume they refer to the same equipment — just different names.

They don't. RMUs and standard switchgear differ significantly in function, protection method, and application.

This article clarifies the two concepts and explains where each is used.

1️⃣ What Is a Ring Main Unit (RMU)?

A Ring Main Unit (RMU) is a type of switchgear designed for ring network feeding.

Its core characteristics:

  • Primarily used in 10kV / 35kV distribution systems

  • Typically consists of a load break switch + fuse (circuit breaker versions also available)

  • Compact, fully sealed, maintenance-free

  • Installed on the customer side — factories, residential complexes, commercial buildings

Why is it called a "ring main" unit?
Because it is commonly used in ring network configurations. Two power sources enter from different directions — one supplies power while the other stands by. If a fault occurs on one section, switching operations isolate the faulty section and restore supply from the other side.

Main functions:

  • Power distribution and switching

  • Fault isolation and restoration

  • Transformer protection (via fuses)

2️⃣ What Is Standard Switchgear?

"Switchgear" is a broader term covering equipment used for receiving, distributing, controlling, and protecting electrical power.

Its core characteristics:

  • Applicable across low voltage, medium voltage, and high voltage

  • Can be equipped with circuit breakers, disconnectors, instrument transformers, protection relays

  • Comprehensive functions, flexible protection schemes

  • Common in substations, industrial electrical rooms, large buildings

Main functions:

  • Power receiving and distribution

  • Overload and short-circuit protection

  • Selective protection coordination with relays

  • Measurement, metering, monitoring

3️⃣ RMU vs Standard Switchgear: Key Differences

Feature

RMU

Standard Switchgear

Function

Ring network feeding, customer-side distribution

Power receiving, distribution, protection

Typical voltage

10kV / 35kV

LV / MV / HV

Main components

Load break switch + fuse

Circuit breaker + protection relays

Protection method

Fuse protection (simple)

Relay protection (flexible, precise)

Construction

Compact, fully sealed, modular

Diverse structures, highly expandable

Maintenance

Very low (maintenance-free)

Moderate (regular relay checks)

Typical applications

Residential, small factories, commercial buildings

Substations, large factories, data centers

4️⃣ Common RMU Types

Type

Insulation Medium

Characteristics

SF6 RMU

SF6 gas

Fully sealed, maintenance-free, compact

Solid-insulated RMU

Epoxy resin

No gas leakage risk, eco-friendly

Eco-friendly gas RMU

Dry air / N₂

SF6-free, best environmental performance

Air-insulated RMU

Air

Lower cost, but larger and requires maintenance

5️⃣ When to Use RMU vs Standard Switchgear

Scenario

Recommended

Reason

Residential distribution

RMU

Ring network feeding, compact, maintenance-free

Small factory distribution

RMU

Moderate capacity, simple maintenance

Commercial building distribution

RMU

Compact, high reliability

Substation outgoing feeders

Standard switchgear

Requires breaker + relay protection

Large factory main distribution

Standard switchgear

High capacity, demanding protection

Data center distribution

Standard switchgear

High reliability, selective protection required

6️⃣ Selection Principles

Choose RMU if:

  • Project is on the 10kV/35kV customer side

  • Ring network feeding is required

  • Space is limited and maintenance-free operation is desired

  • Load is mainly transformers with simple protection requirements

Choose standard switchgear if:

  • Circuit breakers + relay protection are required

  • Selective and precise protection is needed

  • Capacity is large or complex protection coordination is involved

  • Project is a substation or large industrial distribution

Conclusion

RMUs and standard switchgear are not replacements for each other — they serve different roles.

  • RMU: The workhorse of customer-side distribution — compact, maintenance-free, ideal for ring network feeding

  • Standard switchgear: The workhorse of substations and industrial distribution — comprehensive protection, flexible configuration
