I. What Is a GTXGN Solid Insulated Ring Main Unit

GTXGN is a new-generation medium voltage ring main unit built around "solid insulation" — the vacuum interrupter, busbars, and current-carrying parts are cast in epoxy resin through APG (automatic pressure gelation) technology, forming a fully insulated, fully enclosed unit.

It is an upgrade from the traditional SF6 ring main unit. The key difference: SF6 gas and the pressure gas tank are completely eliminated, replaced by a solid dielectric material.

II. Structure

  1. Switching units: available as V-type (circuit breaker), C-type (load break switch), or F-type (load break switch + fuse combination), configurable per circuit

  2. Insulation method: the vacuum interrupter is fully cast in epoxy resin, achieving complete phase-to-phase isolation

  3. Operating mechanism: the disconnector and main switch share an integrated spring mechanism, simple and reliable interlocking

  4. Viewing windows: three phases arranged side by side, each with an independent viewing window to directly observe the disconnector's open/closed position

1. Higher safety

  • Complete phase-to-phase isolation eliminates the structural possibility of phase-to-phase short circuits

  • No pressure gas tank means no gas leakage risk, and no insulation/arc-quenching failure caused by insufficient gas pressure

  • Removes the explosion risk sometimes associated with SF6 units

2. Stronger environmental adaptability

  • Extreme cold: SF6 gas liquefies around -40°C; solid insulated units operate reliably down to -50°C

  • High altitude: SF6 gas tanks are prone to expansion and leakage at low atmospheric pressure; solid insulated units have no gas tank and can operate at altitudes up to 5,500 meters

  • High humidity / sandstorm regions: the operating mechanism is fully sealed, resistant to corrosion and sand ingress

  • Even in flooding conditions, units have remained energized while submerged up to two-thirds of their height, with some cases running continuously for several days

3. Maintenance-free, longer service life

  • No need to periodically check gas pressure or refill gas

  • Mechanical life reaches 10,000+ operations, well above the roughly 2,000 operations typical of traditional SF6 switches

4. More environmentally friendly

  • SF6 is listed as a greenhouse gas under the Kyoto Protocol, with a global warming potential roughly 23,000 times that of CO2

  • Solid insulated units contain no SF6 gas at all, reducing greenhouse gas emissions at the source and aligning with current international environmental standards

IV. What They Have in Common

It's worth noting that SF6 ring main units are also fully sealed, compact, and unaffected by dust or condensation under normal operating conditions — their reliability is well proven, and their procurement cost is typically lower than solid insulated products. Solid insulated units aren't necessarily the right choice for every project — for mild climates with good maintenance access, SF6 units remain a cost-effective option.
