Why Is The Ring Main Unit (RMU) So Popular?

Why Is the Ring Main Unit (RMU) So Popular?

Introduction

In developing countries, rapid urbanization, growing electricity demand, and higher expectations for reliable power supply are putting tremendous pressure on traditional distribution networks. Land is becoming more expensive, environmental conditions are challenging, and maintenance staff are often limited. Is there a switchgear that saves space, withstands harsh environments, is safe, reliable, and easy to maintain?

The answer is – Ring Main Unit (RMU).

Over the past decade, RMUs have become increasingly common in distribution projects across Southeast Asia, Africa, the Middle East, and Latin America. Why are they so popular? This article explains from seven key perspectives.

1️⃣ Compact Design – Saving Valuable Land

In large cities of developing countries, land is extremely expensive. A traditional outdoor substation often requires dozens or even hundreds of square meters, which is almost impossible in city centers.

The RMU features a compact, modular design. A standard unit is only 300–600mm wide. It can be:

  • Installed on a small roadside foundation

  • Placed in a basement electrical room

  • Mounted next to a wall or column inside a commercial building

  • Even built into a compact substation for crane lifting

Result: For the same power capacity, an RMU occupies only 1/3 to 1/5 of the footprint of a traditional air-insulated switchgear, greatly reducing land acquisition and construction costs.

2️⃣ Fully Insulated & Sealed – Withstands Harsh Environments

Many developing countries have coastal areas, heavy rain, dust, and industrial pollution. In traditional switchgear, dust and salt accumulate on insulators. When humidity rises, flashover occurs, causing outages or even equipment burnout.

The RMU uses SF6 gas insulation. All high-voltage live parts are completely sealed inside a stainless steel tank:

  • Unaffected by dust, moisture, salt fog, or condensation

  • No need for regular insulator cleaning

  • Stable operation even in rainy seasons or high-salt coastal areas

Result: Significantly lower failure rates, especially suitable for harsh climates or areas with limited maintenance resources.

3️⃣ High Safety – Protecting People and Equipment

In regions where technical expertise is limited, wrong operation is a major cause of electrical accidents. RMUs are designed with safety as a priority:

  • Fully sealed gas tank: no exposed live parts, preventing accidental contact

  • Mechanical + electrical interlocks: strict “five-prevention” design

  • Explosion-proof design: pressure relief channel directs hot gas to a safe direction in case of internal arc

  • Cable compartment interlock: earthing switch must be closed before the door can be opened

Result: Even semi-skilled workers can operate safely after basic training. This is especially important for developing countries lacking senior electrical engineers.

4️⃣ Modular Design – Flexible Expansion

Power grids in developing countries are often expanded step by step. A small industrial park today may become a large commercial area in three years. If you build for the final scale from day one, the initial investment is too high.

RMUs use a modular combination approach:

  • Incoming, outgoing, metering, PT, and bus-coupling units can be combined as needed

  • One enclosure can house 2 to 6 functional units

  • When more circuits are needed in the future, simply add a new unit next to it – no need to replace the whole cabinet

Result: Phased investment. Start with a small configuration to meet current needs, then expand easily later – avoiding a huge one-time expense.

5️⃣ Low or No Maintenance – Reducing Operating Costs

For remote areas or overseas projects, sending staff for regular maintenance is extremely expensive. RMUs have natural advantages here:

  • SF6 sealed tank: extremely low gas leakage – theoretically no refill for 20–30 years

  • Long mechanical life: load switch up to 5,000 operations

  • No exposed insulation parts: no need to regularly clean insulators or replace contact boxes like air-insulated switchgear

  • Simple and reliable operating mechanism: spring-energy storage, manual or motor operation

Result: Annual maintenance cost is only 1/3 to 1/2 of traditional switchgear – ideal for areas where technicians cannot stay long-term.

6️⃣ Ring Network Feeding – Improving Supply Reliability

Users in developing countries are increasingly sensitive to power outages. Factory shutdowns, mall closures, and hospital blackouts cause huge losses. The RMU is called “ring main unit” because it naturally supports ring network feeding.

What is ring network feeding?

  • Two power sources from different substations form a loop

  • Normally one source supplies power, the other stands by (hot standby)

  • When a fault occurs on one section, switches isolate the faulty section, and the healthy section is restored from the other side

Result: Fault impact is greatly reduced. Outage time shortens from hours to minutes. Supply reliability rises from 99% to over 99.9%.

7️⃣ High Cost-Effectiveness – Better Long-Term Economics ( Icon-Enhanced Comparison)

Project owners in developing countries are often price-sensitive, but comparing only initial purchase price is misleading. An RMU has a slightly higher unit price than traditional air-insulated switchgear, but overall it is more cost-effective.

Comparison Item

Traditional Air-Insulated

SF6 RMU

Footprint

❌ Large

✅ Small (1/3–1/5)

Environmental adaptability

❌ Poor (dust, moisture sensitive)

✅ Good (fully sealed)

️ Safety level

⚠️ Average

✅ High (fully insulated, full interlocks)

Maintenance frequency

❌ High (annual cleaning & inspection)

✅ Very low (check every 5–10 years)

Expansion flexibility

❌ Low (needs whole cabinet replacement)

✅ High (modular add-on)

Initial purchase price

Lower

Slightly higher (+20–30%)

⏳ Total life-cycle cost

❌ Higher

Lower

Conclusion: Over a 20-year service life, considering land, maintenance, outage losses, and other factors, the RMU’s total cost is significantly lower than that of traditional air-insulated switchgear.

Conclusion

The RMU is becoming increasingly popular in developing countries not because it is “new”, but because it truly solves real problems:

  • Expensive land → compact footprint

  • Harsh environment → fully sealed insulation

  • Weak technical workforce → safe, low maintenance

  • Limited budget → modular, phased investment

  • High user expectations → ring network feeding, high reliability

  • Long-term view → lower life-cycle cost
