SF6 (sulfur hexafluoride) has long been the dominant insulating medium in medium and high voltage switchgear, prized for its excellent performance. But it's also an extremely potent greenhouse gas: SF6 has a global warming potential roughly 23,900 times that of CO2, with an atmospheric lifetime of 3,400 years. More critically, atmospheric SF6 concentration is growing at about 8.7% per year, and electrical equipment is the primary source of SF6 emissions, accounting for roughly 70% of the total.
That's why the 1997 Kyoto Protocol already called for fundamentally restricting SF6 use by 2020, and regions like the EU have continued tightening restrictions on SF6-based equipment in recent years.
The industry has explored three main categories of alternatives:
Conventional gases (dry air, N2, CO2, and their mixtures): stable properties, low production cost, and a liquefaction temperature well below SF6's, with lower greenhouse impact
SF6 gas mixtures: can meet insulation requirements and lower the liquefaction temperature for cold-climate use, but can't fully eliminate SF6 use and don't fundamentally solve the greenhouse gas problem
Strongly electronegative gases and novel insulating gases (e.g. C4F7N, C5F10O): still in research and limited-scale application
Among these, the conventional gas route — dry air in particular — has become the most widely adopted direction, because it offers the cleanest environmental profile and the highest technical maturity.
Air insulation alone has a limitation — its insulation strength is less than 40% of SF6's — so the industry has largely converged on a combined approach: vacuum interruption + clean/dry air insulation:
Vacuum interruption: solves the switching problem — vacuum interrupters can reach a mechanical life of 10,000+ operations and are typically maintenance-free for their entire service life
Clean dry air/nitrogen insulation: solves the insulation problem, replacing SF6 gas
This technology route is already fairly mature: it's widely applied at the 40.5kV and 72.5kV voltage classes and is now being extended to 145kV and above.
In 2025, China Southern Power Grid commissioned a 145kV GIS at the Xinan substation (110kV) in Shantou, Guangdong, using an environmentally friendly gas mixture to replace SF6 — cutting greenhouse gas emissions by more than 99% while maintaining the same compact size and reliability as conventional equipment.
Sweden's E.ON has replaced its SF6 medium voltage switchgear with SF6-free equipment, supporting its 2025 fossil-fuel-free target while eliminating gas recovery costs and reducing maintenance and replacement expenses.
Regulatory pressure will keep increasing — if your project involves export to regions with tightening F-gas (fluorinated greenhouse gas) regulations, such as Europe, planning ahead for SF6-free equipment avoids future compliance risk
Long-term operating costs may be lower — SF6-free equipment removes the maintenance burden of gas testing, recovery, and refilling
The technology is mature enough now — current vacuum + air insulation solutions already match traditional SF6 equipment in compact size and reliability; it's no longer a trade-off between "eco-friendly" and "high performance"
Not every installation needs immediate replacement — existing SF6 equipment remains safe and reliable under normal operation; the shift shows up mainly in the selection direction for new projects and equipment upgrades
Aspect | SF6 gas insulation | Vacuum + air insulation |
|---|---|---|
Greenhouse impact | GWP ~23,900× CO2 | Significantly lower (case shows 99%+ reduction) |
Insulation strength | High | Lower for air alone, offset by vacuum interruption |
Maintenance needs | Periodic gas pressure checks | Vacuum interrupters largely maintenance-free |
Technical maturity | Very mature | Mature at 40.5–72.5kV, developing at 145kV+ |
Regulatory trend | Facing tightening restrictions | Aligned with international environmental goals |
